Jill Greenberg

Greenberg (July 1967) is an American photographer, known for her portraits and fine art work. She created a series of images 'End Times' in 2006 which documents crying baby's. The images reflect Greenberg's frustration with the government. She used her daughter, friends and child models to model for her images, to get the children to cry Greenberg and the children's mothers offered them sweets or toys and then took them away which resulted in them having tantrums.

Greenberg has two children of her own and said that "crying is not evidence of pain or any real suffering. Its really just the way children communicate".
Viewers focused more on the crying baby's rather then her political views. It was said that she abused the children to get them to show emotion, which to me it isn't really that surprising this was said. Because of how our society is today i think that children are a delicate subject and Greenberg was brave to use children in her project.

You can see that Greenberg is below the children when she captures them which makes the atmosphere in the images I think more intense. Although the children are crying and vulnerable they still hold some control because of how Greenberg has positioned herself.
The lighting is perfect, in some of the images like Mercury and Faith you can see the beauty dishes in the reflection of their eyes. You can see that shes experimented with a light on each side of the childrens face and one in the middle also one on the background to create a halo effect. With my own work ive only experimented with the one light (the beauty dish) but i would defiatly like to use Greenberg's technique as inspiration and experiment with more lights.

Out of the whole series this is my favourite image. Although the subject isn’t crying as much as the other children did in the other images, it still shows emotion. The lighting again is perfect, there’s so much detail but it’s still so simple. The position of her hand, her eyes looking away from the camera and the name of the image fit together. So far Greenberg is my favourit portrait photographer.
